Pool Lifeguards Update

The weather is heating up and before you know it the pool will be calling your name if it isn't already!  And while we are getting the pool ready with new umbrellas, we do have a key decision that needs to be made in the next week regarding employing lifeguards for the summer.

Although our signage and facility rules communicate that we do not have lifeguards on duty, we have most recently employed about 4 lifeguards per year. As this summer rapidly approaches (well, its pretty much here!), we are now faced with some considerations that we would like to share with all of our residents.

The factors that have lead us to consider discontinuing employing lifeguards for the summer include the following:

1. Board Leadership Changes

Tony Slimick recently resigned as Board President after 15years of service. The new Board is now getting up to speed on all the aspects of the Board and responsibilities including launching a new website, documenting and streamlining our processes and procedures, updating vendor contracts and focusing on the renovation of the pool bathrooms. The addition of managing a staff of lifeguards including scheduling and payroll exceeds our capacity as volunteers.

2. Financial Resources

Aside from over 10k in payroll, we have the cost of year-around payroll service fees from ADP as well as workers compensation insurance. Without this staffing cost, we could redirect funds to the renovation of the pool bathrooms or facility upgrades.

3. Staffing Availability

Our lead lifeguard will not be returning this summer and the availability of the other guards is not confirmed. There could be an issue of hiring qualified guards this close to the summer.  The task of interviewing and hiring a new staff of guards again would exceed our capacity as volunteers.

HOW WILL THIS DECISION BE MADE?

Our next voting opportunity as a Board will be June, 14th. As a result, we are urgently requesting resident feedback. If there is little to no negative feedback on discontinuing the employment of lifeguards, we will proceed in that direction. The impact of that decision will be to cancel our payroll account at ADP and upgrading some of the pool signage to insure we are in compliance with the applicable laws for pools without guards.

Please feel free to email us with your thoughts at highlandoaksca@gmail.com or come to the Board meeting on May 10th at 7pm at the Cabana Clubhouse.

We look forward to hearing from you!
